Beautiful Baraboo
I finally got to go see the Al Ringling Theater. I had never been there as many times as I have been to Baraboo. My pictures don't do the place justice. This was fantastic! A couple more hours in the Library again this morning, then it's off to Bloomington, IL and the 2010 CHS Convention!

Beautiful Baraboo
I'm in Baraboo, Wisconsin for 2 1/2 days before heading on to the CHS Convention. While spending time at the CWM Library, I went over to vist Ralph Pierce and Greg DeSanto at the International Clown Hall of Fame. Make sure you stop by and visit them. Their place is amazing.

CHS Convention
The day has come to finally leave for Wisconsin. I'm on my way to the airport in just another hour. I'll be posting on the road from the Circus World Museum and then the CHS Convention as the week goes along. For today, let's enjoy some photos from my 2007 trip to Baraboo.

The CWM houses the largest collection of circus archives in the world. I am so excited to be able to spend a couple days in there again.

A question arose a while back about the Thrall flats at CWM. The documentation I copied at the Library said they got 6 of them. Four are still sitting there with the RAS lettering while two were restroed and used in the Great Circus Parade trains.

Carson & Barnes Circus
The Carson and Barnes Circus is in Ohio and will be in Norwalk next Tuesday. The Kelly-Miller Circus is on their way to Kelly's Island off the shores of the Sandusky / Port Clinton area of Ohio. There's two great circuses within 30 miles of each other for all you Ohio fans.
I'm on my way to Jacksonville, Florida for my niece's wedding tonight. Back home tomorrow and flying to Wisconsin on Sunday. Whoohoo!

Ringling Barnum cages
I found these three photos in my dad's books today. There is no indication of who the photographer was.On the back of this it says: #90 tableau cage 14' long.
On the bottom it is noted: I am sure this is later than 1939 as in 1939 this was painted white withsteel tired wooden wheels. This has truck wheels and hard rubber tires and looks like red paint.

On the back is written: #87 tableau cage - 14' long - RBBBNoted at the bottom is: In 1939 this cage had wooden wheels with steel rims - this must be mid 1940's. Seems to be painted all one color with no trim.

More than 45 years ago a handful of Showmen gathered in Chicago to form what is now the oldest and largest trade association representing the mobile amusement industry. Nowhere in North America is anyone working harder for the protection of the traditional circus…and performing animals…than the Outdoor Amusement Business Association (OABA). This year, in their 45th anniversary year, the OABA is introducing a fabulous, new Circus Fund Lion pin to add to your collection!
For more than two centuries in this country performing animals have been a vital and integral part of the circus and petting zoo business; and have enriched the entertainment value of the tradition of American circuses and traveling petting zoos. Performing animals have amazed and amused countless millions of people with their natural beauty, physical capabilities and intellectual ability to learn and perform a variety of feats.
Life-long bonds of friendship between individual trainers and animals are fostered and promoted through mutual respect, positive training and high levels of care by owners who care for them 24/7. Additionally, as ambassadors for their respective species, performing animals have brought to the public a keen awareness and appreciation for the plight of their counterparts in the wild.
The OABA and its members, speaking as a collective voice for circus industry, strongly supports the right of USDA licensed animal owners to partner with circuses for entertainment and education. The OABA also encourages conservation programs and preservation efforts that are intended for the long-term survival of exotic animal species.
In the mid 1990s the OABA actively joined in the mission to keep performing animals in the circus. In order to do this, the association’s members, circus fans and professionals write or appear, object and argue on behalf of the use of performing animals in exhibitions and shows against well-financed opposition. The organization has tried, with limited resources, to support the pro-animal causes in agricultural fairs, petting zoos and circuses. This initiative is expensive and requires commitment and hard work that frankly can only be offered in the quantity which the OABA Circus Animal Fund can afford. As the entire fund is provided by donations it is once again time for all of us to keep it funded.
The 2010-2011 donation campaign has begun with a fabulous image of a performing LION as its symbol.

I'm not a RBBB expert. This definitely isn't the Big Top but there appears to be an entrance canopy near the telephone pole. Also it is a bale ring then a push pole then a bale ring etc. top. Very odd design. Has anyone got an idea?

Dales Bros. Circus - 1948
The Dales Bros. Circus was put on the road from 1948 to 1950 with Mickey Dale and the McIntosh brothers as owners. They had two elephants in 1948 and 1949 named Judy and Mary. Both of the elephants had been on the James M. Cole show the year before. At the end of 1949, they sold them both, then turned around and bought two more for the 1950 tour.

Don Robinson's Ameri-Congo Circus
This interesting little show went out in 1952. I can't tell you a whole lot about it as this show isn't even listed in the Bob Parkinson book, "Directory of American Circuses 1793-2000."

I believe this little girl was called Laska. She went to a Zoo in Albany, Georgia after this 1952 season.
