SC State Fair
According to the newspapers, there was 72 rides in place at the State Fair. North American Midways was the big show. There was three ferris wheels.
SC State Fair
Mr. Charlie Daniels and company was the live entertainment on Sunday at the SC State Fair. At 73 years of age, he didn't slow down. For an hour and a half, he showed just how talented a musician he really is.

Bill Strong
In reading Facebook this morning, I'm saddened to say, that Bill Strong passed away. He was a great aerial performer, behind the scenes guy, family man and all round good friend. My sympathies go out to Trudy and the family!

Witte Museum
The Witte Museum in San Antonio, Texas opens their Circus Exhibit - "Circus Folk" on October 24th. You can visit the Witte Museum website at http://www.wittemuseum.org/ Many of you may remember the old Hertzberg Museum. The Witte Museum is now in charge of the Hertzberg collection and working hard at getting it all back on display again.Barton & Bailey - 1915
The Campbell Bros. Circus went broke in 1912. Wm. P. Hall came to Fairbury, NE. to look it over but passed on the show. Some of the Campbell owners re-organized and bought the show back then sold half of it to Rice Bros. Circus and took the rest back out as Cole Bros. World Toured Circus in 1913.They made the whole season but folded and sold it all to Wm. P. Hall this time. Hall was in the business of buying and selling shows and animals. Barton & Bailey was framed at the Hall farm out of a lot of the old Campbell Bros. Circus. Fellow Circus Historical Society member P.J. Holmes tells me there are not a lot of Barton & Bailey photos to be found so this next photo is a real treat.

This is the Barton and Bailey show in 1915 loading on the train. If the photo will enlarge enough for you, the box car has Barton & Bailey lettered on it. Fellow Circus Historical Society member P.J. Holmes down in Texas was kind enough to share this photo out of his collection with us.
The Barton & Bailey Circus was carrying 5 elephants that they leased from Wm. P. Hall. They were Alice, Annie, Lizzie, Diamond, and Boo. Alice, Annie, and Lizzie had been on the Campbell Bros. Great Consolidated Shows when they closed in 1912. All five elephants went on to join Hugo Bros. Circus in 1915 after Barton and Bailey closed in August. You can see the taller elephant car behind the box car.

Many a circus played this town over the years just to show their circus to Mr. Hall or because they wintered or formed at his farm and Lancaster became their opening day. Every kid needs a playground and this was ours. This was our backyard. Dad had found some old circus equipment over the years and we always had a swinging ladder or a trapeze up between two trees. We had a tent for years, thus the sidewall shown here. Dad loved the circus. I guess I do too!

This is my Dad back in 1970. He found this banner and three to go with them in a junk store down around Akron. We have four or five pieces of paper from the Malloy show to go with it, a set of roman rings, a few cables and a swivel. How big was the show? I don't know but it's NOT listed in the Bob Parkinson book, "Directory of American Circuses.""Home"

Yankee Robinson Circus
This is one of the more plentiful letterheads from Fred Buchanan's shows. Buchanan managed to go under and come back many times. Finally in 1932, he went under again owing Wm.P. Hall. While court papers were taken out trying to collect on the mortgage, Wm. P. Hall had a sheriff's sale for the Buchanan show and Hall bought it all for nothing, thus legally owning it all again and still having Buchanan responsible for the note. Fred Buchanan was looked for over a very long time but was never found.
Robbins Bros. Circus
The opening of Robbins Bros. Circus in Lancaster, MO. after wintering at the Wm.P. Hall farm was recorded here in the Lancaster (MO.) Excelsior on May 1, 1924. With Fred Buchnan as an owne, this same show was called World Bros. Circus in 1923.
