Mr. Kitto, could you please explain to me how you distinguish the difference? I spent years on truck shows and they were also referred to as the generators. Please help us to understand!
Maybe the same way as some folks call the ice box a "refrigerator"?
In earlier times, the circus used more then gas or diesel generators to produce light. Therefore, the use of "light plant" came into use before the day of the diesel generator becoming a common sight on the lot.
PJ said it all. Maybe you are not familiar with two of the old time circus fans, my dad, Charley Kitto and model builder Joe Taggart, but I never heard either them refer to a light plant as a generator wagon. Bob Kitto
Looks like a generator WAGON to me, Bob,if all the WAGONS were train light plants, the show would have no power on the lot,so I must assume they were LOT LIGHT PLANTS,(say that fast three times)... And I have NEVER heard that, just because you never heard it,from two outstanding people, dose not mean they never were called that.
Now I must go have a Tomato sandwhich,or is that Toemahto?
Randy, I agree that they are all generator wagons. The light plants on the lot also had flood lights to aid in tear down. Now have I confused everybody enough? Bob Kitto
I performed from 1973 to 1995 with a couple years off in between. I did an aerial cradle act for three years, low wire as a clown, trained llamas, ponies, then lions and tigers for 15 years. I am now a firefighter, a member of the Circus Historical Society and an author of several circus and carnival related subjects.
