Council upholds Permit Denial!

City Council votes no on elephant statue

Columbia (SC) City Council members voted 6-1 Wednesday night to deny an animal rights group's request to put an elephant statue on the sidewalk in front of the State House.
City Councilman Kirkman Finlay voted no.

Council members said the request by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals for a parade permit was not the right kind of permit. They suggested PETA apply for an encroachment or place their statue in one of the city's parks.

PETA wants to protest the circus, which will be in town the first week of February.

As a retired city employee I can say this, Kirkman Finlay was never one of my favorite people. Although he had only been a councilman for a couple of years before my retirement. He was never a city employee person, wouldn`t give you the time of day. Other council members were much more likeable. He always voted to take away from the employees, but yet they are the backbone of the city government. It dosen`t suprise me at all that he would vote in favor for PETA, for the simple reason that an employee turned down there application ! Thank God I`m retired and can say what needs to be said !
